Fundraisers at an annual fair hosted by the Wimbledon Disarmament Coalition (WDC) raised more than £1,600 over the weekend.

Fete of the Earth opened its doors to more than 250 visitors at St Marks Church Hall, Compton Road, on Saturday, May 17.

Stallholders selling a variety of goods, from plants and books to bric-a-brac and handmade cards and jewellery set up shop and donated a percentage of profits to the non-governmental organisation.

Campaign groups Palestine Solidarity, Stop the Wall, Free Shaker Aamer and Wool Against Weapons manned stands to raise money and gather signatures for petitions.

United Nations Association Merton, Friends of the Earth Merton and Save St Helier Hospital campaign group also attended the day dedicated to peace and green organisations.

Joanna Bazley, WDC secretary, said: "We were wearing t-shirts saying 'NHS not Trident'. We felt this was the message which resonated there.

"It was a very happy day but we also felt that we could get a message across."

The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) argues the £100bn cost of Trident, a project to construct the replacement of nuclear submarines, should be used to prevent cuts to the NHS.

WDC is a non party-political organisation affiliated with the CND which campaigns for peace and nuclear disarmament.

Profits from the fair, which was open from 11am to 2pm, will go towards WDC campaigns or be donated to other peace organisations.
