Whistleblowing allegations in relation to fraud, corruption, data protection and staff conduct at Merton Council have emerged in a report.

Accusations of bullying and intimidation, false invoices and concerns about receipt of gifts are all currently under investigation.

There were 24 whistleblowing incidents reported in the last year, up from 13 the previous year, a report published on March 12, found.

Recommendations for "improved controls" resulted from four cases, eight cases were inconclusive and twelve cases are on-going.

A Merton council spokesman said: “It is perfectly right that our staff, as well as the public, should expect us to be open and transparent about council business.

"As an employer, we recognise the importance of having a procedure for raising concerns.

"The whistleblowing policy is actively promoted within the organisation so staff know how they can raise an issue and so we can ensure that concerns are properly looked into and resolved.”

Other allegations related to parking, employment procedures and conflicts of interest.
