Young residents have received their gold Duke of Edinburgh award at a presentation in St. James’ Palace.

Duke of Edinburgh Patron and Founder Prince Philip attended the event in which the 13 candidates were given certificates for completing the programme.

Activities included volunteering at care homes, developing drama skills and several expeditions to Snowdon to gain the award.

Councillor Maxi Martin, Cabinet member for children’s services also attended and received a three year Duke of Edinburgh operating licence allowing the council to continue the initiative.

She said: "I was privileged to be presented to the Duke of Edinburgh and also to receive the renewed three year operating licence.

"It was truly inspirational to meet these fine young people and hear their stories on the work they carried out to achieve their awards, I was so proud to be part of their special day."

One winner, Lucy McDermott, described the experience as ‘the best feeling’ and a ‘great accomplishment’.

Run by the Merton Youth Service, Duke of Edinburgh is a scheme available to all in the borough aged between 14 and 25.
