A bold pattern of colour and decoration has been hand painted on a fence to welcome people to Mitcham.

Block colours and botanical plants on the Sibthorpe Road car park fence have been created by designer Linda Florence.

The mural was made using techniques including silk screen printing and photographic emulsion.

Linda Florence's ‘Secret Garden of Mitcham’ took inspiration from plants such as lavender, ferns and wild grasses which were grown locally in Mitcham.

The length of the painted plants varies as you move along the fence to break up the pattern and so they can be visible to those parked in their cars at any point along the road.

Inspiration for the specific colours used came from William Morris prints, these have been stained into the wood to allow the grain of the natural surface to still be clearly visible.

Funding for this has come from the ArtPortunities project, in partnership with One Mitcham, supported by the Mayor of London and Merton Council.
