For the past couple of months there has been something strange happening at Wimbledon station on Platform 5 during early morning rush hour, and it doesn't involve anything to do with a Platform 5 and 3/4 for the fast train to Hogwarts.

Those of us who have to get the train to London Waterloo will know only too well how difficult it is to board at the best of times, but more recently there has been the added difficulty of a phenomenon involving a number of men in 'high vis' jackets putting a stop to our normal routines as they shuffle around the platform telling us where we can and cannot walk.

Reminiscent of your school days when the geeky, spotty prefects would use their power and tell you to walk to class or assembly.

Well this charade is beginning to test my patience and is clearly grinding the gears of other passengers.

Recently I've had a couple of altercations with these apparent self imposed station headmasters which has prompted me to write this letter.

Who is behind this experiment god only knows, but I'm sure he or she does not have to catch a train with the rest of us in the mornings so will be completely unaware of the frustration it's causing, or the fact that all it achieves is further delays for passengers and fewer people actually getting their train on time.

I believe their intention is to ease the number of passengers coming onto the platform and allow passengers to get off easier, but what about the vast majority of passengers who have to get on the train that far outweigh those getting off?

Do they think we're stupid and can't control ourselves? My main gripe in all this is not being allowed to walk down the stairs to the approaching train, but having to use the other set of designated stairs going down, despite whether or not it's a busy time.

Now I understand why they may not want you to walk down stairs when hoards of people are coming at you in the other direction, but who in their right mind would do that anyway as you would miss your train, but to stop people coming down an empty set of stairs when there is not a single person on the platform who is getting off or who is walking up the stairs is nonsensical and a complete farce.

They have even taken to taping up gaps in the stairs to stop people ducking under to get on the other set of stairs. This not only looks horrible and very amateur but smacks of being rather spiteful.

I'm not blaming the 'high vis' brigade although one or two are clearly enjoying their five minutes of fame and power, but what I need to know is who is behind this joke and whether it's a permanent fixture to Platform 5 or if anyone can tell me when this nightmare will end.

It really is a very badly thought out plan involving perhaps a dozen extra staff and is extremely antagonising to passengers wanting to get on the train.

Believe it or not rush hour is a busy time and involves lots of people squashing and pushing to get on and off trains.

This happens the world over so deal with it like the passengers involved have to deal with it every single day; it comes with the territory.

Maybe it's health and safety gone mad again or maybe it's to wind up passengers even more so they miss their trains. One thing for sure is that it causes more delays and definitely still does not get you a seat on the train, only more trains will do that and I'm quite sure this is not going to happen any time soon.
