Hundreds of BMX racers arrived in Mitcham this week to compete in the first round of a regional competition.

Around 400 of the best riders in the south competed in the 2013 south region BMX summer series at Mitcham's newly opened track on Sunday, March 3.

The 340m track, near St Mark’s Academy on Acacia Road in Mitcham, opened last year and is the second longest in London second only to the track at the Olympic Park.

A spokesman for the event said: "The event was deemed an amazing success by the sports governing body, and everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed the day.

"There were also some great results for local riders, one big winner was last years Southern Champion in Girls 13-14 year olds, Karys Richards, she is a member of the Merton Club, and trains at the track every weekend."

The event was hosted by Merton Saints BMX club who formed shortly after the completion of the track in 2012.

The club holds coaching sessions on Saturday mornings from 10-12 and pay and play sessions on saturday afternoon and all day sunday.
