Merton has a higher proportion of Schools Streets than any other borough in London, according to new statistics.

The London Boroughs Healthy Streets Scorecard has published data to show the health of each borough’s streets according to nine indicators.

The scorecard is produced by a coalition of transport, health and environment organisations which help investigate data.

The 2021 London Boroughs Healthy Streets Scorecard has revealed that more than two in five of Merton's schools now have a School Street (41%) - which is the highest amount out of any London Borough.

Islington (40%) and Hackney (39%) came in second and third place for the amount of school streets. Whilst Bexley and Sutton scored bottom with 0%.

Looking at the overall results, the scorecard shows that Islington has the healthiest street.

With Hackney and Camden following closely behind Islington as the top-scoring London boroughs.

This is determined by nine indicators :

  • Low Traffic Neighbourhoods
  • 20mph Speed Limits
  • Controlled Parking Zones
  • Physically Protected Cycle Track
  • School Streets
  • Sustainable modeshare: % of journeys made by ‘sustainable modes’ public transport, walking & cycling
  • Active travel
  • Road casualties
  • Car ownership

Reporting on Merton’s performance, the coalition said: “Merton has the second highest score of all Outer London boroughs and its stand-out result is that 41% of its schools now have a School Street, where traffic is restricted at arrival and departure times, which is the highest rate of any London borough.

“It also now has a 20mph speed limit on nearly all its streets which makes it the leading Outer London borough on this indicator.

"And it scores well on Low Traffic Neighbourhoods with 34% of suitable streets in a LTN (a good score though lower than leaders Hackney 55% and Waltham Forest 47%).

"And while it must be congratulated for introducing some new LTNs, most are historic and more could have been done in the past year.

“Merton also has very low numbers of protected cycle lanes compared to other boroughs, with just 3% of roads covered compared to leaders City of London with 21% covered.

"This is clearly an area for action.

"Overall Merton sits mid-table and still has some way to go to catch up with the best performing Outer London borough Waltham Forest and to meet the Mayor’s Healthy Streets targets."
