Danny Cipriani has been left out of England’s squad for their three-day training camp in Bristol.

It is a decision head coach Eddie Jones insists is based on form rather than Cipriani’s conviction in August for common assault and resisting arrest.

Here, Press Association Sport examines his performances this season compared to those of his fly-half rivals George Ford and Owen Farrell, who have been included in the 36-man party.

Club: Gloucester

Age: 30

Caps: 16

Three games into his Gloucester career and Cipriani has already won over supporters in The Shed through his vision and range of passing. The nation’s most gifted playmaker has been operating behind a dominant pack, however, and his game thrives on front-foot ball. Jones has attended all three Gloucester games and will have scrutinised his game carefully.

George Ford

Club: Leicester

Age: 25

Caps: 47

The repercussions of Leicester being routed at Exeter on the opening day have benefited Ford, who has been released by Geordan Murphy’s subsequent appointment as temporary head coach. Now empowered to run the Tigers’ attack, Ford showed the spark that faded last season to be named man of the match against Newcastle before excelling at Wasps.

Owen Farrell

Club: Saracens

Age: 26

Caps: 65

The captain on England’s summer tour to South Africa has played a game fewer than his rivals due to the back injury that ruled him out against Northampton and while strong, his form after three rounds has been less eye-catching. Farrell remains the first name on England’s team-sheet, however, with the only doubt being over whether he plays at fly-half or inside centre.
