Over 4,500 competitors will descend on Twickenham Stadium this Saturday to take part in the Spartan UK Stadion race.

The obstacle course event, organised by Spartan Race, is the first of its kind to be held at such a major sports venue inside a sports stadium.

Competitors will weave their way through 5km of sloping walkways, navigate the winding corridors and scale the iconic stadium stairs in what is the biggest new sporting event to come to London.

“We are all absolutely thrilled to bring the Spartan Stadion race to this iconic location,” Sam Lansdale, the Spartan General Manager said.

“Twickenham is steeped in history and it’s incredibly exciting to be able to hold the first ever obstacle event here.

“The course will include a whole host of new obstacles and it’s an amazing opportunity for people to race at a world-famous stadium.

“The event is accessible to people of all abilities and there will be a real festival atmosphere to keep everyone going right to the finish line!”

Wimbledon Times:

Spartan was founded by passionate adventure racer Joe De Sena in 2008 and has grown to become the world’s largest obstacle race and endurance brand, with more than 200 events in more than 42 countries across the globe and over 1 million racers a year.

Registration for competing in the Twickenham event has sold out but spectators are encouraged to travel to the stadium to witness athletes tackle a combination of 20 unique and challenging CrossFit style obstacles as well as the more traditional box jumps, stair climbs, low crawls and carries.

It’s not the first-time sport other than rugby has been played at the ‘Home of English Rugby,’ as the RFU’s interim Chief Executive Nigel Melville explained.

“After having played host to the NFL and esports it’s great to now have the Stadion 2019 obstacle race visit Twickenham later this year.

“We’re excited to bring another new event to Twickenham Stadium and showcase the versatility of our venue.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Spartan.”
