Carshalton Athletic enjoyed a bountiful weekend of league business but must become “more clinical in front of goal” to achieve success, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Ahead of an FA Cup third qualifying round tie away at Lowestoft Town this Saturday, the Robins picked up four points from two home games to leave the club just outside the Isthmian Premier top five.

Ricky Korboa hit the goalscoring trail as he scored the winner in a 1-0 win over Margate last Saturday, then he grabbed the opener during the 1-1 draw with Lewes Monday night.

But assistant coach Keith Boanas has warned his players to be wary of not converting all the chances they are creating.

“We need to become more clinical in front of goal because I feel we dropped two points against Lewes,” Boanas said.

“Aside from a basic error that gifted Lewes their goal, I thought our work rate and effort was good across both matches but failing to convert so many chances is our biggest problem right now.

“We work on finishing and set-pieces in training a lot but sometimes it comes done to individual decision-making on the pitch. That needs to improve if we want to achieve our aspirations this season.”

Carshalton survived two goal-line clearances in the first-half against Margate before a piece of individual skill by Korboa won the game on 78 minutes.

And last season's top scorer got his third of this campaign after dispossessing hesitant Lewes goalkeeper Nathan Stroomberg-Clarke and tapping home from less than a yard out.

But the Robins defence failed to deal with a low cross just before half-time and James Hammond rifled the loose ball home to ensure the visitors left Colston Avenue with a point.

“Both games were tough but we are happy to come through them undefeated,” added Korboa.

“We do need to more clinical though, we could’ve scored two or three in each game. I myself need to start scoring more and I aim to keep this run going now.”

Carshalton’s FA Cup tie against Lowestoft is their third away game in the competition this season after beating Bracknell Town and Harrow Borough en route to Suffolk.

The two clubs used to be Isthmian Premier rivals earlier in the decade but Town are currently languishing third from bottom in the Southern Premier Central.

Lowestoft Town vs Carshalton Athletic is on Saturday 5th October (kick-off 3pm).
