Brentford boss Thomas Frank has had his say on the introduction of VAR technology after it made headlines following the latest weekend of Premier League football.

Manchester City were denied a last-gasp winner against Tottenham after Aymeric Laporte committed handball, according to the new law, in the build-up to Gabriel Jesus’ goal.

That was before Wolves survived a VAR scare to hold Manchester United when Ruben Neves’ stunning strike crashed in off the underside of the crossbar.

Since being rolled out this season, the technology has proved divisive – some welcome it and feel it gets unfair blame, others believe it has negatively shaped the game.

Although its use in English football has been restricted to the Premier League, there have also been calls this season for its introduction in the Championship.

Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate is among them who, following their 1-0 defeat to Brentford, said the linesman made “two mistakes” for their goals.

According to the Northern Echo, he said: “Ashley Fletcher was two yards onside, and I mean two yards. I can’t understand how you can’t see that. Then after that, he gives a handball, and it wasn’t.

“My view is that VAR is in the Premier League, so why isn't it in the Championship? Why? Is the Premier League more special than the Championship? Not in my eyes.”

Bees boss Frank said he had not seen the goal City were denied against Spurs but, when asked for his views on the new technology, he said: “In terms of more fairness, I think it's right and sometimes I like that. When we have it when it's more fair and you can get that.

“But even with that, remember the Man City-Tottenham goal last year in the Champions League, where you think Man City is in? It's offside like this [pinching his fingers together]. How can you decide that?

“I'm a little bit in doubt of it. I like the more fairness [aspect] but I think there will always be discussion, that's why we love football. Sometimes we hate it but that's you love football, massively.

“Talking about football, it's the only sport in the world where you can have a game like we had against Birmingham and you're not winning.

“You can take every other sport in the world – you can take [the] 100-metre sprint, you can take volleyball, you can take handball, you can take cricket, you can take any other sport in the world – and you will win that game.

“That's nothing to do with VAR, that's just the nature of the game, which is remarkable.”

When asked whether he thinks VAR will be introduced into the Championship, Frank added: “I don't think it matters if I think it or not, I think it'll come in the end.”
