Five things we learned from Brentford's 2-0 win over Millwall

Play from the back

The beautiful game, when it works, it’s wonderful, but when it doesn’t it causes many heart-in-mouth moments. Brentford’s pass it from the back style football has gathered many plaudits, but the pressure they bring on themselves by passing from goal-kicks needs to stop. Too many times Bentley was caught with the ball at his feet and passing it straight in to touch. When it did work however, it was very nice to watch, but sometimes, just get rid!

Captain marvel

Romaine Sawyers has settled in to his new captains’ role very well. He glides across the pitch effortlessly and every time he gets the ball he’s looking to get on the front foot. McEachran may get a lot of headlines for his passing ability, but more often than not it is Sawyers who makes the crucial pass. Fans should hope the armband will keep him at Griffin Park for as long as possible, and keep the riches of a certain midland's club at bay.

Maupay the provider

No goal, but two assists. Up against two very physical defenders the Frenchman held his own. Bringing two very impressive wingers in to the game at every opportunity he showed that he can be the provider when he’s not the one sticking it in the onion bag.

Match made in heaven

In Chris Mepham and Ezri Konsa, Brentford have a centre back pairing as good as any in the league. Both are quick, strong, have a great reading of the game, but more importantly they're hungry, Brentford really have a solid foundation to work from. The clean sheet will have pleased Thomas Frank as much as the victory.

Competition for places

Ollie Watkins came off the bench and made a huge impact. Both Canos and Benrahma played well and effected the game in positive way, so to bring on a player with of Watkins' quality is a good sign. He took his goal well and will send a message to the aforementioned wingers that they can’t afford to be off their game. A nice headache for Mr Frank to have.
