Julian Jeanvier’s first-half goal was enough to help Brentford see off Cheltenham Town into the next round of the Carabao Cup at Griffin Park.

The defender scored past the half-hour mark to grab his second in two games for the Bees during the midweek clash.

Brentford, who lost 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, dominated most of the game but couldn’t capitalise through Alan Judge and Said Benrahma.

Now through to the third round of the Carabao Cup, they could be drawn with rivals Fulham or Queens Park Rangers who also won.

Dean Smith made seven changes to starting 11 which was defeated at Ewood Park, with five of those players being selected for the bench.

It appeared Scott Flinders was the only obstacle between the hosts and the goal as he denied Behrama, Judge, and Nico Yennaris in the opening exchanges.

Cheltenham could’ve had a chance themselves when Tom Field’s errant pass fell to Immanuelson Duku, only for Luke Daniels to pounce on the immediate danger.

But the breakthrough arrived when Jeanvier made sure the ball went over the line following a scramble at a corner which first saw Marcus Forss denied at close range.

Brentford went into the break with 11 shots on goal and 63 percent of the possession, as the second 45 minutes saw much of the same transpire.

Though Chris Mepham was left bruised as Duku was adjudged to have led with his elbow in a clash with the defender, seeing Yoann Barbet replace him.

The Robins nearly got off to a flyer when substitute Sam Jones arrived late into the box to fire towards goal, only for Yennaris to block his shot.

And in a moment of audacious skill, Benrahama nearly doubled the lead when he nutmegged Josh Debayo before trying to chip Flinders but was denied by an outstretched hand.

Smith later introduce Chiedozie Ogbene for Forss, whose free-kick saw the Algerian take another crack, as Brentford eased to a win.
