Hercules Wimbledon made a strong start to their cross-country season, finishing second in the opening Surrey League fixture.
The club returned to form on home turf at Wimbledon Common in the first of four league meets on Saturday, after a disappointing opener last year ended their four-year title streak.
They finished just 22 points behind defending champions Belgrave Harriers, despite missing several key athletes.

Jamie Crowe, fresh from victory at the Great Scottish Run, led the charge in second place. He was only edged out by race winner Jack Kavanagh in the closing stages.
Jack Hobden delivered a breakthrough performance to finish 11th. Jack Dickson, making his club debut, came home in 21st, followed by George Mallett in 24th.
Freddie Hessian, Ed Mallett, and Pancho Panchev packed tightly in 37th, 38th, and 40th.
Richard McDowell (47th, third over-40), Vitalh Baranov (63rd), and Eoin Brady (65th) completed the scoring ten.
Additional strong finishes came from James Stockings, Sonny Nicoll, and Sam Todd. The club hopes to field an even stronger team in the next fixture.
Hercules Wimbledon said: "Last year Hercules' defence of a title they had won for each of the previous four years was stopped in its tracks as a dismal opening showing left them well off the pace from week one. This time just 22 points separated Hercules from reigning champions Belgrave Harriers as a number of breakout performances left the club in a surprise runners up position, despite the absence of a number of heavy hitters."
The women’s team also impressed, placing fifth out of 15 teams—one of their best recent results. Emma Lord led the squad in 26th, with Alice McCormack 32nd, Eloise Davies 40th, and Claire Grima 41st.
Alex Binley (47th), Niamh Thompson (54th), and Gina Galbraith (71st) completed the scoring seven.
Elsewhere, Will Lewis continued his strong run of form by winning the Middlesex 10km Road Championships at Victoria Park. He finished in a personal best time of 30:38, moving to 11th on the club’s all-time rankings.
Chris Thomas clocked 65:05 at the Manchester Half Marathon, his second-fastest time ever and his best since joining Hercules. This performance puts him equal fourth on the club’s all-time rankings.
Mr Thomas finished 13th overall in what was described by the club as a day of “incredibly fast running” in Lancashire.
