Charlton’s 2-1 defeat at Preston means the Addicks have registered just one win in 16 league games.
In that run Lee Bowyer’s men have only failed to find the back of the net on four occasions, but alarmingly they’ve not kept a clean sheet in that time.
In 12 of those fixtures they’ve conceded two or more goals.
The loss at Deepdale keeps the Addicks entrenched in a relegation battle, and with fixtures against lowly Barnsley, Stoke and Luton on the horizon, February will be vital.
But more importantly it’s what Charlton do in January that have many fans talking.
The club have reportedly made enquiries over Peterborough attacker Marcus Maddison, while Lee Bowyer admitted he’s after a couple more in the attacking third.

The supporters however feel that after the Addicks’ display at Preston, issues at the back need to be resolved before firepower is added.
Tom Lockyer has been a mainstay in Bowyer’s side this season, while Naby Sarr, Jason Pearce and Deji Oshilaja have all failed to cement down a regular starting spot.
Although their commitment has never been in question, many feel something needs to change if Charlton are to climb the table.
Our defence is a joke. No clean sheet since October & conceded 2 in 90% of games since. Just can’t hold on to anything.

We’ve had 15 days & signed a Preston reject on loan. Need at the minimum 5 quality signings in 12 days or we’re relying on point deductions to survive. #cafc https://t.co/CPx6gskuEV
Defence is so shit #cafc

We aren’t missing players in defence so why are we still defending like a bunch of tossers? #cafc

Charlton’s defence 2019/20. #cafc https://t.co/DzVrfy1iIl

A defence, a defence, my kingdom for a defence. #cafc https://t.co/PfLgle6AuZ

I don't want to hear anything about injuries & missing players. Both goals conceded by #cafc today were the result of amateur ish, naive defending. For me the players need to stand up & take responsibility in these defensive situations.

Fucking embarrassing defending we know how capable Bauer is in the attacking box and we have no one near him. Get the basics right #cafc
— Aron Peters (@aronpeters8) January 18, 2020
Surely we must be the worst team at 'defending' set pieces ffs. #cafc

Inept defending. Shock. #cafc

Embarrassing, never looked like defending that #cafc

Awful defending, fucking awful as usual #cafc

A big dominant centre half is what we are desperate for . Simple as that . Ive had enough of sarr and conceding weak goals #cafc

Can’t help but think how good Lockyer & Bauer would be together #cafc I miss the BFG....
— Keith Robinson (@keith0177) January 18, 2020
#cafc because we only have 2 defenders anywhere near championship standard in Matthews and Lockyer. Been saying it all season. Desperately need good defenders this window https://t.co/9iz2AgTmgy
— Orp Addick (@AddickOrp) January 18, 2020
We need to sign defenders more than anything. Pathetic defending yet again. #cafc
— Cliffie97 🏴🦁 (@cliffie777) January 11, 2020
Surely Bowyer has to sign by Monday?
— Daniel Smith (@BellCheg) January 19, 2020
Somethings not right if he doesnt? #cafc
