Lee Bowyer said he can’t ask for any more from his Charlton players following their heart breaking 2-2 draw with Hull City.
Keane Lewis-Potter headed home in the 96th minute to extend the Addicks winless run to ten and leave Bowyer with the seemingly common task of lifting the spirits of his injury hit squad ahead of their next fixture, away at QPR.
Despite admitting the manner of defeat was gut-wrenching, Bowyer believes the squad he’s assembled on a shoestring has enough to compete in the division.
“I’m on my knees in the dressing room, saying ‘wow, how do you keep giving me everything and come away with so little,’ I feel for them,” he said.
“I’ve been in the game long enough, I see when people cheat and see when they give everything, I know the difference, and they can’t physically give any more.
“This is the group we put together on the smallest budget in the league by a country mile, we’ve hand-picked these players because what we lack in quality, we have big hearts, that’s why we are in games against big sides like Hull, Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff, Huddersfield.
“The only disappointment this season has been Middlesbrough away, we were horrendous from start to finish, every other game we’ve been in and that’s in the tough times.
“I’m proud of them.
“Things will change, we’ll turn it around, I know that, we just need a little break.”
