Gary Rowett is the leading contender for Millwall manager.

The Lions board have been looking for a replacement for the post since Neil Harris stepped down a week ago.

Former Derby, Birmingham and Stoke boss Rowett distanced himself from the vacant post at Sunderland earlier this week after Jack Ross’s departure, leaving the door open for Millwall to step in.

Other names John Berylson, the Millwall chairman, is considering are that of former player and fan favourite Tim Cahill, as well as former Ipswich and Sunderland boss Roy Keane.

Kevin Muscat threw his hat in the ring earlier in the week but it’s thought the lack of experience the former Millwall and Wolves man has doesn’t appeal to the Lions board.

Adam Barrett to charge for the 2-1 win over Leeds at the weekend following Harris’s departure but it’s thought he's unlikely to get the post permanently.

Suggestions are rife that Ian Holloway is keen to return to The Den started circulating yesterday after the man at the helm during the 2014-15 season appeared to praise Berylson on Twitter, calling him a ‘fantastic man.’

His return would seem unlikely however with Holloway getting the sack from the Bermondsey outfit, his first of his career, and ironically opened the door for Harris’s arrival.

According to bookmakers Rowett is the clear front runner for the role, with names such as Chris Coleman, Kenny Jacket and Nigel Adkins making up the list.
