Cam Horseman's mixed day at Donington may have cost him title

Cam Horseman's main rival was able to take a comfortable victory and the full 25 points. Horsman then made a superb start to race two and was leading by more than 25 seconds before a red flag meant a re-start. In the re-run he fought off a strong challenge from title rival Ogden to take the race victory. Horsman had gone into the weekend 12 point in arrears. And whilst he remains second in the championship, he is 32 points behind Ogden with two races left.

Qualifying

After two free practice sessions on the Friday qualifying took place on Saturday morning. Although the track was dry and there wasn’t any wind the track temperature was a cool ten degrees.

With fifteen minutes of the thirty-minute session remaining Horsman was second but seven tenths behind the fastest rider, Jack Hart. Championship rival Scott Ogden was in fifth.

The clock was ticking but Horsman managed to put in a superb lap of 1:42.334 to go top and a tenth ahead of Hart. He further improved on his time finishing with a 1:41.289 which put him 0.838 seconds ahead of Ogden in second.

Race One

Clearly by Saturday afternoon the track temperature had improved and it was just under twenty degrees. Horsman got away well but was closely followed by Scott Ogden. The two pushed each other on but it was Horsman who crossed the line lap after lap a tenth or two ahead of the rider from Doncaster.

Then on lap 8 of 12 Ogden managed to make a move stick and took over at the front of the race. Now the number 72 of Horsman was doing the chasing as he managed to keep on the back wheel of Ogden.

As they went through the Melbourne Hairpin on the penultimate lap Hormsan managed to regain the race lead crossing the line 0.118 seconds ahead of Ogden to start the final lap.

Over the final 2 miles of the race Ogden again managed to pass Horsman. The rider from London was pushing hard as they approached the Melbourne Hairpin for the final time. This time a little too hard and as he turned the tight corner he lost the front end and crashed out of the race. Fortunately, he was unhurt but Ogden was able to take the win and stretch his lead to 37 points.

Race Two

Horsman lined up second for race two but made another great start as he took the lead in the Moto3 standard class into the first corner. It looked like Hormsan would benefit from some misfortune for his rival. Ogden had got caught up in an incident with two other riders. This caused him to run off into the gravel before returning to the track. Over the next few laps Horsman opened a lead of more than twenty seconds over his nearest competitor and looked on for a comfortable win. Ogden was making his way through the field. However, there was a strong possibility he would drop a good number of points to Horsman.

Unfortunately for Horsman, the race was stopped just after halfway when the rain began to fall. With the riders on slicks the red flag came out and a 6 lap restart would take place.

Horsman had lost all his advantage for the restart as they lined up on the grid for a sprint race. Ogden made quick work of the few riders between him and Horsman and was soon on the back wheel of the Lewisham lad.

Despite briefly losing the lead Horsman held on to take a hard fought victory crossing the line 0.090 seconds ahead of Ogden.

Cameron Horsman said,” The fall in race one was a real blow. I pulled back five points in the last race but I am not thinking about the championship now. My aim is to try and win the final two races of the season. I’d like to thank SP125 and all my sponsors including Nova Racing.”

There are two more races at the final round of the British Motostar Standard class Moto3 Championship. These are held Brands Hatch in Kent on the weekend of the 18 to 20 October 2019.
