Lee Bowyer has revealed there are two men vying for one right-back spot in his squad.

With Chris Solly the only recognised right-back at The Valley, Bowyer is keen to add competition and cover for the position.

Tyrone Mears, 36, was known to be trialling at the club, but the Addicks boss has revealed that Adam Matthews is also fighting to earn a contract.

A free agent since being released by Sunderland in the summer, the 27-year-old has been with Bowyer’s team for the past week.

“We’ve got Adam at the club, he was at Sunderland,”

Bowyer said.

“He’s Welsh international, 27, he’s a bit younger than Tyrone, but they’re two good players who are trying to get one spot.

“We’ve got two in, both options, both are doing well, but it’s not really fair to make too much judgement as they haven’t done much a of a preseason, they hadn’t kicked a ball all summer until they came here.”

Despite his relatively young age compared to Mears, Matthews has amassed a wealth of experience with stints at Cardiff, Celtic, Bristol City and Sunderland, and has 14 Welsh caps to his name.
