Charlton manager Lee Bowyer admitted the red card to Portsmouth midfielder Ben Thompson looked a “little harsh.”

Thompson was given his marching orders in the Addicks 2-1 win after his challenge on Lyle Taylor in injury time.

“To be honest, I thought the red card was a 50/50 tackle,” said Bowyer.

“It didn’t look like he went over the top of it, maybe it was a little bit late, but from where I was standing, it was a bit harsh. Maybe the referee had a different angle from me.

“There were two players going in to win the ball from where I was. It looked quite innocent to me.”

The tackle on Taylor left the forward leaving Fratton Park in a protective boot with what Bowyer described as a “big lump” on his foot in a sight that would cause concern to the Addicks faithful.

Taylor’s strike-partner and opening goal-scorer, Karlan Grant, left the field in the first half with a hamstring injury. The extent of Grant’s injury will not be known until he’s had a scan revealed Bowyer.

“Hopefully it’s not too bad. He said he just didn’t really want to push it too much in case he runs and then it really goes badly and could be a six-weeker.”

Bowyer praised referee John Brooks following the victory.

“He was very good. This is a tough place to come, they are so loud and they’re maybe trying to push the referee into making decisions.

“There were a lot of penalty shouts but he got the big decisions right from where I was standing.”
