Director of rugby Fergus McCarthy has put Old Emanuel’s solid start to the new Surrey Division Two season down to a new found strength in depth.

The New Malden club made it an unbeaten October, with Saturday’s six-try 39-0 thrashing of Old Rutlishians adding to two wins and a draw.

The run, which has included safe passage to the second round of the RFU’s National Junior Vase, has seen McCarthy’s men score 116 points and concede just 12 – all from penalties.

“The club has been a happy place through last season, and this year we have put it together by defending well as a team,” said the rugby director.

“With a strong second team also having a fine season, there is the strength
in depth necessary with changes forced by players with busy careers.”

Kingston ended a run of three straight Surrey One defeats with a 15-10 home win over Thames Ditton-based  Old Paulines.

Head coach Earle Wilkes’ men, knocked out of the Vase last week, had previously been winless and will be out to double up at Old Tonbridgians this week.
