Plans to build hundreds of new hotel rooms across Merton over the next 10 years have been announced.

By 2025 Travelodge aims to open six hotels – containing a total of 570 rooms – in the borough, where it says there is a “severe lack” of quality low-cost accomodation.

The chain has announced plans for a 150-room hotel in Wimbledon town centre and a 110-room hotel in Wimbledon Park.

Three other hotels – each containing 90 rooms – are set to arrive in Mitcham, Morden and Colliers Wood, while a 40-room site is planned for Wimbledon Village.

A Travelodge spokesman said: “Merton has a severe lack of good quality budget hotel rooms given the size of its population, local attractions and proximity to central London.

“The six hotels we are seeking to open will employ 150 people and enable residents to begin a career in the hospitality industry.”

The hotels could be conversions or newly built, and might form part of larger new developments.

The chain has said it will build 184 new hotels in London.
