Busy beekeepers have appealed for more land to boost the number of hives in Wimbledon.

Members of the Wimbledon Beekeepers' Association say they need more space to increase the population of the insect, which is under threat around the world.

Councillor David Dean, who is backing the quest, said: "Many Wimbledon Guardian readers know that the bee population is under severe strain around the world.

"However, local residents can help and at the same time ensure we have a lasting supply of Wimbledon honey on tap for all to enjoy."

The association - a division of the Surrey Beekeepers' Association - runs courses, workshops and social events. Anyone who can provide private land for keeping the insects should email WBKA@wimbledonbeekeepers.co.uk or call 020 7193 7733.
