Helston Athletic will be crowned league champions at their final match of the season tomorrow (Saturday), at home at Kellaway Park.

The club secured their place at the top of the league on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Torpoint.

Kick off or Saturday’s clash against Clevedon Town takes places at 3pm, with the match followed by the presentation of the Toolstation Western League Premier Division champions’ trophy.

To make sure that plenty of the home crowd will be able to witness the historic occasion, there will be reduced admission on the gate tomorrow – with adults £5, over 65s £3, under 18s £1 and under 14s free, provided they are accompanied by someone over 18.

Their position at the top of the premier division sees Athletic promoted to the Southern Football League.

Their place at the top was all but confirmed following a 1-0 win against Falmouth Town last Thursday, played in front of a record-breaking attendance of 1,179 at Kellaway Park.

Tuesday then saw them play away to Torpoint AFC, for the penultimate game of the season.

Kick-off had to be delayed due to delays with the Torpoint Ferries, which members of both sides and the referee were caught up in.

The first goal of the match came from Steve Collwell midway through the first half, with a perfectly placed shot from 25 yards.

Torpoint thought they’d equalised at 40 minutes, but the goal was disallowed by the referee who ruled that there had been a foul on goalkeeper Kyle Moore.

It was just that single goal separating the two teams as they headed in for half time, and that was how score stood until the 79th minute when Athletic was able to double their lead - Rikki Shepherd heading home a cross from Callum Martindale.

The hosts managed to claw one back with a penalty in the 91st minute, but it was Helston’s night, as it has been Helston’s season.

It just the latest triumph for the club this season, which has also seen Helston Athletic Vets taking home the County FA Sunday Cup and Helston Athletic Women runners up in the Cornwall Football Association Cup Final.
