We turn the spotlight on one of Sutton’s headteachers, Mr Carl Bates, whose leadership shapes the future of our children’s lives
What was your path to becoming a headteacher?
It was pretty conventional. I completed a 4 year degree in Education at the University of Exeter and qualified as a Secondary PE, English and Drama teacher in 1998. I have worked in state middle, secondary and primary schools and also at overseas international schools. I worked as a Deputy Headteacher for 6 years at a prep school in Bucks before going back to Uni to become a student again and then going to Uzbekistan to become the founding Head at an all through secondary international school; finally arriving at Seaton House.
Why did you want to become a Headteacher?
I’ve always taken great pleasure in being a positive influence in the lives of those around me, and I don’t just mean the children. As Headteacher, I get to help support the whole community, including children, parents and staff at the school. It really is a very privileged position and one which I look forward to doing for a long time.
What’s the most surprising thing about you that people might not know?
I am ambidextrous, although I write with my right hand, I can do most other things left or right-handed and I am also left-footed like all the great football players! This ability has led to a few sporting exploits over the years.
What are you most proud of at your school?
Seaton House girls really are special. We take wellbeing very seriously here and have rightly achieved the ‘Wellbeing Award for Schools’ where we went through a rigorous process proving what we do to create such unique and talented children. These things don’t just happen by themselves you know! We have a talented teaching team with a huge amount of experience between them, and I know every single person connected to the school plays their part in helping the girls become the wonderful ambassadors that they become.
