A popular Croydon pub wants to extend its opening hours at the weekends to stay open until 2am.

The Spread Eagle in Katherine Street applied to Croydon Council to open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights, a change from from the 12am it is currently open until. The application also includes having live music until 1am.

The application was lodged by Fullers but the pub is leased by Whelans, which runs four other pubs in Croydon. The pub is based in what was originally the Croydon branch of the Union Bank of London in a Grade II listed buliding built in 1893.

Just one local objected to the plans saying there may be disturbance from late night music.

However, at a meeting of Croydon Council’s licensing committee on Tuesday (June 27) Austin Whelan, of Whelan Pubs, said the windows of the pub have been soundproofed so there will be no noise late at night.

Councillors asked whether people would be drinking on outdoor tables until the early hours. Mr Whelan said it is already the policy that people have to come inside from 9pm and smokers are not allowed to take drinks outside after this.

The local objector also complained that people would be able to buy alcohol to take away, but this is not something the pub has applied for.

A written response from James Anderson, a solictor from Fullers, said: “The application was only for on sales of alcohol and therefore after the current terminal hour it would not be lawful, even if the extension was granted for customers to leave the premises with drinks as these would be off sales.

“In addition, currently the premises do not allow customers to leave the premises anyway with open containers and this policy will be maintained.”

The committee’s decision will be published within five working days.
