A man has been jailed after he tried to headbutted a police officer while being arrested for burgling two Wimbledon pubs.

During the early hours on June 28, Stephen Broderick broke into The Alexandra on Wimbledon Hill Road and attempted to open the cash register.

When he failed to do so, he made off with bottles of champagne and spirits.

He walked a short way up the road and stole more bottles of alcohol from All Bar One but was caught as he was leaving.

During the arrest, Broderick tried to headbutt the police officer but hit his shoulder instead.

He was charged on the same day and appeared at magistrates court on July 29, 2022.

Broderick, 48, was jailed for two years and six months by Kingston Crown Court on October 18 for burglary and assault on an emergency worker.

A spokesperson for Merton Police said: “#Sentenced | Stephen Broderick, born 01/08/1974 was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court yesterday 18th October for two counts of Burglary and Assault on an Emergency Worker (Police Constable).

“In the early hours of the 28th June 2022 Broderick broke into a pub and attempted to open the cash register, making off with champagne and spirits.

“He was found having broken into a second pub shortly after by officers, where he was found carrying bottles and arrested.

“The burglaries happened at The Alexandra, Wimbledon Hill road SW19 and All Bar One, Wimbledon Hill Road SW19. Broderick was arrested at All Bar One when he was found carrying bottles out of the venue.

“During arrest he has attempted to headbutt an officer, hitting the PC on the shoulder.

“He was charged on the same day and appeared at magistrates court on the 29th July 2022.

“He was given 2 years and 6 months imprisonment by Kingston Crown Court.”
