South East Londons Horniman Museum has been nominated for the Art Fund's Museum of the year award.

The Forest Hill museum and gardens first opened back in 1901 and are known for its wealthy collection of anthropology, natural history, musical instruments, and their large display of taxidermied animals.

Along with its very impressive gardens that are free to all and its strong community support, the Horniman Museum is a worthy competitor in the world’s largest museum prize.

Hoping to also claim the prize are The Story Museum in Oxford, People’s History Museum Manchester, Ty Pawb in Wrexham and The Museum of Making in Derby.

Organisers for the awards say that the nominees reflect the “creativity and resilience” of museums and their focus on “engaging the next generation of audiences in innovative ways.”

Noting that the last few years have been tough for museums due to the pandemic, Art Fund director Jenny Waldman said: "An abundance of applications to be Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022 shows the creativity and resilience of museums right around the country, despite the immense challenges of the last two years."

The winning museum will be announced at a ceremony at The Design Museum in London on July 14 and will receive £100,000.

The other nominees will each be given £15,000.
