Flats in an old South London pub are now on sale for up to £500,000.

The Queen’s Head pub in Cricket Green closed down in 2016 and planning permission to turn it into seven one and two-bedroom flats was approved by Merton Council in 2017.

At the time, the local campaign for real ale (CAMRA) group said it would “rob the community of the possibility of this being returned to them as a pub”.

However, the applicant said at the time that it was “not viable” as a pub and was put on the market for at least a year before the plans were approved.

The new flats are built in the former pub and extensions on either side of the building. There are still construction workers on site putting the finishing touches to the development.

The property listing shows that one-bedroom flats start at £350,000 while two bedroom properties start at £425,000.

As new builds, they qualify for the government’s help to buy scheme meaning buyers need just a five per cent deposit and could get a 40 per cent help to buy loan.

The listing reads: “Queens Quarter is an exciting, brand-new development of one and two bedroom properties, ideally situated overlooking the green spaces of Mitcham Cricket Green.

“Each of these modern properties is unique in layout, beautifully finished with stylish fixtures and fittings, contemporary kitchens and bathrooms and each enjoys either a private terrace/garden or balcony.

"Each property has its own front door, other benefits include gas central heating and secure communal cycle storage.”

But the flats haven’t been so well received on social media with the Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage Society tweeting: “Local homes for local people – not! £500k asking price for some of the flats in the eyesore conversion and extension of the Queen’s Head now branded Queens Quarter.”

While another Cricket Green local wrote: “Another example of how not to design a development that will sit comfortable with surrounding buildings.”

An attempt was made to contact the architect and developer behind the flats.
