HEROES of the food world who go above and beyond to promote Yorkshire produce are being honoured next month.
Judges of the Deliciouslyorkshire Taste Awards 2021 have singled out key figures who strive to help other food and drink businesses.
They will be toasted at the awards ceremony along with other finalists behind the best local produce as well as the best new business, with The Larder Club - a social enterprise in York supporting the rehabilitation of women offenders - among the contenders.
The food heroes shortlist includes Karl and Mandy Avison, of Pickering’s Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café, along with Tracey Baty, of Three 60 Marketing & PR; and Adam and Jennie Palmer, of Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil.
Cedarbarn, a family business in Pickering, has been shortlisted for six awards over four categories including best use of local produce on a menu; best ready to eat category; and the best fresh produce with their home-grown strawberries and Victoria plums from the Cedarbarn orchard.
Mandy said they were honoured by the Food Hero nominations, and to be 'in such fine company'.
"Although it is our names which appear on the Yorkshire heroes shortlist, this is actually for the amazing Cedarbarn team as a whole, for their hard work and dedication over lockdown, and really digging deep in what has been a very unusual and challenging summer.
"They have done a fantastic job in difficult circumstances and we are so proud of them.”
Also on the Food Hero shortlist are founders of Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil and Charlie & Ivy, Jennie and Adam Palmer.
Adam said: "Helping to promote Yorkshire's amazing producers and our fellow family businesses comes naturally and is just part of the day job.
"To be honest, we're more excited that our brand-new Plant Based Mayonnaise has been shortlisted in the Free From category as this marks a completely new departure for the Charlie & Ivy's brand."Whatever happens awards-wise, the dy awards events are always great fun and a good night will be had by all."
The winners will be announced at the Pavilions of Harrogate on November 10, when food and drink broadcaster Nigel Barden and chef consultant Steph Moon will host an evening of champagne, local food and celebration.
Other Deliciouslyorkshire Taste Awards categories celebrate best bakeries, beers, spirits, confectionery, sweet preserves and independent retailers.
Finalists from York, North and East Yorkshire, chosen from hundreds of entries, also include Rudgate Brewery, Wold Top Brewery, Yorkshire Wolds Apple Juice, Ryeburn of Helmsley, Yorvale, Voakes, Sloemotion and The Yorkshire Pasta Company.
