Two cases of the new Indian variant of Covid-19 have been detected in London, as the health crisis worsens in India.

The variant, also known as B.1.617, is currently designated as a “variant under investigation” (VUI) rather than a “variant of concern” (VOC), such as those first identified in Kent, Manaus (Brazil) or South Africa.

However, concerns are mounting as Public Health England revealed that 77 cases of the Indian variant have been detected in the UK.

According to the Evening Standard an analysis of test results suggests two of these cases were in Brent and Harrow.

Covid-19 expert, Dr Duncan Robertson, of Loughborough university, told the Paper:

“We do not have full information on the 77 cases the variant under investigation first detected in India. We do know that at least one case has been detected in Brent and at least one case has been detected in Harrow.

“It is clear that variants under investigation and variants of concern are in England and that detected cases are rising.”

The variant of coronavirus first identified in India is likely to become a “variant of concern” which could potentially lead to the country being put on the UK’s travel “red list” an immunology expert has said.

Danny Altmann, professor of immunology at Imperial College London, added variants of the virus which causes Covid-19 “do pose a threat” and vulnerable people could be “caught out”.

This comes as Boris Johnson cancelled his visit to Delhi next week, following concerns over travel to India.

The Prime Minister’s already-curtailed trip was scrapped altogether today (April 19), with plans for him to instead speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the month.

Downing Street issued a joint statement from the British and Indian governments calling off the trip.

“Prime Ministers Modi and Johnson will speak later this month to agree and launch their ambitious plans for the future partnership between the UK and India,” the statement said.

“They will remain in regular contact beyond this, and look forward to meeting in person later this year.”
