Major works to transform the “gateway” into Southend High Street are taking shape, with bosses hoping it will encourage shoppers back following Covid-19.

The majority of upgrades for London Road have now been completed, including changes to pavements, green roof bike storage, and an efficient sustainable urban drainage system put in place.

Remaining work on this section include a new paved area and benches, new trees, bespoke lighting and an improved bollard system.

Despite delays, council bosses are delighted with progress so far.

Kevin Robinson, councillor for business, culture and tourism, admitted the project “will not solve all the challenges”, but it is hoped it could be a catalyst for growth.

He said: “High streets up and down the country have faced challenges over the last 12 months that they would have never anticipated.

“Southend High Street is not alone in the challenges, but we are dedicated to creating a welcoming entrance.

“This continued investment, alongside the purchase of the Victoria Shopping Centre, means we are in a much stronger position to enhance the High Street.”

The phase involving paving works on Victoria Circus began on January 25. They are set to continue for six to eight weeks.

Further improvements include better street lighting, a gateway feature into Victoria Circus from Victoria Station, new block paving and feature stones, as well as new trees, greenery and planters.

Leigh resident Lisa Marks said: “The area definitely needs something to make it look more attractive, you want it to be a destination.

“So anything to help with lighting and make people feel more safe, along with features to make it look a bit nicer is only a good thing.

“You want places for people to sit that are comfortable.”

The work, which was approved by the full council in June 2020, began in August last year and has been carried out by the council’s term contractor, Eurovia Infrastructure Limited.
