A PENSIONER who scrawled “death to Islam” on walls has been told he cannot go out at night.

Bahman Khorsandian wrote messages against Islam on walls in George Street, Church Road and Blatchington Road, Hove.

The 77-year-old was spotted on CCTV committing the offences and police issued an alert to find him.

Sussex Police said: “When the graffiti was translated it was deemed to be offensive.”

The slogans included: “Death to Islam” and “curse on Islam.”

The graffiti, written in several languages including Persian and Arabic, was seen in various locations.

At the time it was reported that there had been as many as 80 incidents, with residents saying that when messages were painted over, they reappeared on walls again the next day.

Khorsandian, of Hogarth Road, Hove, appeared at Hove Crown Court charged with religious or racially aggravated criminal damage.

He was put under a curfew at his home between 10pm and 8am every day for the next eight months.

The electronic tag will be monitored.

Meanwhile he was ordered not to keep any materials which could be used for public graffiti, with a ban in place for two years.

Khorsandian was also ordered to pay £1,200 to Brighton and Hove City Council for the cost of cleaning and removing the graffiti.

Chief Inspector Dee Wells said: “We take all reports of hate crime seriously and will be robust in dealing with this offences. This graffiti was criminal damage and offensive to some members of our local community.”
