The victim of a fatal shooting in Penge on Sunday has been named as 43-year-old Dean Edwards.

Police believe Mr Edwards was walking through Betts Park in south east London in the early hours of July 12 when he was shot in the back of the head.

Detectives say they are in the early stages of the murder investigation, but are keen to speak to anyone who was in or around the Betts Park area at the time, or has any other relevant information which could help.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at around 2:20am on Sunday, July 12, after a man had collapsed on Croydon Road near the junction of Tremaine Road in Penge.

The man was found with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

While formal identification awaits, police are confident the deceased is Dean Edwards, 43, who lived in South Norwood.

Mr Edwards' next of kin have been informed, and a post mortem examination is due to take place later this week.

At this stage, police believe Dean was walking through Betts Park and was about to leave the park via the Croydon Road exist when he was shot in the back of his head.

Met Police a fast-paced investigation is ongoing, but there have been no arrests.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran, said: “We are in the early stages of investigating the murder and are working hard to piece together what happened on the night that lead to Dean losing his life in such a horrific incident.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in or around Betts Park in Penge on the late evening of Saturday 11 or early into Sunday 12.

"We are particularly interested in anyone that might have seen or heard anything suspicious between 12.15am and 1am on Sunday, or any time before or after this.

“Anyone who lives in the area, or who was there at that time, may well have information that could assist us tremendously. No matter how insignificant it may seem, we urge you to please get in touch.”
