Activists will be cycling through Merton as part of their campaign to act on the UK climate emergency.

The planned cycle will be held on the last Sunday of every month, starting outside of Merton Civic Centre at 2 pm.

The announced plans follow a series of protests which have taken place outside of Merton Council.

Extinction Rebellion Merton says they are concerned for their children's future due to people turning to cars in response to Covid-19.

On June 28, the activist group cycled through the borough and were applauded for their efforts in Wimbledon town centre.

Wimbledon Times:

A Merton primary school teacher who took part in the bike ride, said: “I have always been very nervous about cycling on the road.

"It was a great experience to be surrounded by other cyclists.

"I would love to be able to cycle safely with my son- the roads are very intimidating for new cyclists."

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Merton said: "Air pollution is a silent killer and perhaps people don't realise how serious it is.

"Our children are breathing in toxic air and it is affecting their long term development.

"If everyone stopped doing short journeys by car, we would see a significant drop in local air pollution.

Wimbledon Times:

"We are in a climate emergency and have to reduce emissions now.

"We want cleaner air to breathe, we want to cycle and walk safely.

"We would like to say thank you to everyone that joined us on Sunday."
