Merton activists warn of 'scary future'

The activist group staged their fourth protest after becoming increasingly worried over their children's health and future in response to the UK climate emergency.

Activists replicated an action that was done in London’s Trafalgar Square on May 18 with the hopes of 'pushing' Merton to act quicker on the emergency.

Shoes were donated by neighbours, parents and teachers who have said they are 'scared' for their children’s future- with Extinction Rebellion pledging to give them to Shoe Aid following the action.

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Merton said: "The shoes send a chilling reminder to the Government to protect children and young people during the recovery from the coronavirus crisis- the generations most vulnerable to the climate and ecological emergency.

"During the pandemic, there have been dramatic changes to the way we live to keep us safe and we have been shown what’s possible if the political will is there.

With eco-anxiety rapidly growing among young people and action on climate change likely be pushed back because of the pandemic, there has never been a more glaring opportunity to protect the lives of young people.

"During lockdown, many people started cycling and are now too scared to cycle on the road due to high traffic levels.

"If we are to make any significant reductions in air pollution we must make it safe for pedestrians and cyclists to travel around Merton.

"We must change the status quo- we have a responsibility to reduce carbon emissions.

"The council have declared a climate emergency and we want them to act quickly.

"It is great that the council have started measures but we need to move faster.

The cars are back with a vengeance."

Merton Council has started to carry out works across the borough to implement more space for residents to walk and cycle.
