LAWS banning dog walkers from exercising their pets on some beaches have been reintroduced.

Brighton and Hove City Council initially relaxed seasonal rules set to take effect on May 1 preventing dog owners from walking their pooches on certain beaches.

The city council said at the time the move would help dog walkers practise social distancing.

But now environment chief Councillor Anne Pissaridou has announced the ban will be reimposed, lasting until September 30.

“We hope residents and their dogs will continue to enjoy their daily walks along the city’s dog friendly beaches, while social distancing and staying safe,” she said.

The city council said the ban had been reinstated due to other lockdown rules being relaxed and more people crowding on to the seafront.

The announcement came a day after it warned the number of visitors to the seafront had made physical distancing “impossible” .

Nine dog-friendly beaches have been designated, marked by signs and available to view on the city council’s website.

These include a large section of the beach between the Sea Life Centre and the King’s Road junction with Montpelier Road.

A city council spokesman said: “Dog owners are reminded to ensure dogs are kept under control on the beaches, keep dogs on leads when walking on the promenade, clean up after their dogs and be considerate to other seafront users who may be nervous of dogs.”
