A soldier from Wimbledon will be running a cricket marathon in his back garden to raise money for the NHS.

Rob Cross, 25, from Wimbledon, will be taking part in the marathon 'virtually' alongside his fellow soldiers, Charlie Newman, 25, and Rob Treasure, 24.

The three soldiers will each be running a marathon, made up of 2,387 lengths between two sets of cricket stumps in their gardens.

The friends will be donning cricket whites, gloves and a bat for the event taking place tomorrow, May 2.

Wimbledon Times:

The three friends, who met at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, say they were inspired by the fundraising efforts of 99-year-old Captain Tom Moore.

Speaking to Wimbledon Times, the three soldiers said: “We think it will be a great chance to do something unique during isolation for the benefit of others.

“We have seen on the news that a few people are running marathons in their gardens, we don’t think we have seen anyone doing it in cricket kit.”

“We have been inspired by the tireless work that frontline medical staff and key workers are currently doing.

“We know it is a difficult time for lots of people at the moment, so any bit of joy, support or entertainment we can bring to people through this challenge would I am sure to be well received.

“It won’t be the most exciting viewing, but if it brings a smile or two and some valuable funds to two fantastic causes then it will be worth it."

The men will be going live at around 9.30 am and plan to start running at 10.00 am tomorrow.

Money raised will be split between charities, 'NHS Charities Together', and 'Chance to Shine' to help spread the power of cricket throughout schools and communities..
