The Managing Director for Southwestern Railway (SWR) has announced plans to reduce a number of services today following the Government's announcement which urged people to avoid all but essential travel.

Mark Hopwood said: "We are going to be using a reduced service from Monday [March 23] but, we are really focusing on the people who need to use it [which are] the key workers.

"And, of course the Government have issued advice which is not to travel unless it is essential.

"Clearly we ask people to bear that in mind."

In a bid to reduce the spread of COVID-19 – SWR are asking all staff, who may be displaying symptoms, to stay at home and self-isolate for up to 14 days.

By reducing services, bosses at SWR are hoping that they can provide a reliable timetable for passengers who work in professions like healthcare, police, ambulance and fire services.

Passengers should also be aware that there will be alterations to services such as last- minute cancellations which may occur if staff are unavailable.
