A CAR burst into flames after being involved in a crash on the M61.

The incident happened around 9.30pm on Wednesday on the northbound carriageway, between junction 2 and junction 4 (Walkden)

Two lanes of the motorway were closed for more than an hour while emergency services attended.

Police, ambulances and fire crews from Farnworth Community Fire Station were all at the scene.

Highways England tweeted: "There are two lanes closed on the M61 northbound between J2 and J4 Watergate Lane following a Collision.

"Traffic Officers are on scene with several Emergency Service Vehicles."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Yesterday shortly before 9.30pm, police were called to reports of a vehicle on fire on the M61 -J4."

The motorway reopened just after 11pm.
