A Bromley resident whose friend’s family was left homeless after a devastating hurricane in the Bahamas is doing all he can to help.

More than 1,300 people remain missing after Hurricane Dorian destroyed homes and left dozens dead last month.

Juvenille Diniz-Leonello, 33, who lives near Bromley South, recalled phoning a friend and former work colleague, Danielle, 23, to see how her first day in a new job went.

"She was crying on the phone," Juvenille told News Shopper. "I said what happened and she said her family home is destroyed and they’ve lost everything."

News Shopper:

Danielle grew up in the Bahamas before moving to London when she was five; Her mum and sister remain abroad.

The family home was ripped apart and valuables going back decades were left in tatters after the hurricane struck.

"She lost everything," Juvenille explained. "Memories, pictures, everything from her childhood is gone and nothing remains.

"Even pictures taken two minutes after she was born."

Juvenille felt compelled to help and started a GoFundMe page to support Danielle’s family.

"This money will go towards helping them rebuild their home and lives," he explained.

Juvenille said Danielle "burst into tears" when he told her what he was doing.

He said that "doing something is better than nothing" and any support would be much appreciated.

Juvenille is a former of colleague of Danielle after the pair worked together at Natwest Bank in Peckham.

He wrote on the fundraiser: "I can't help everyone, but I can try and help my friend, Danielle and her family. I'm hoping to raise this money, to help them pick up the pieces of what little is left."

Hundreds of pounds have already been raised for the family and you can support the fundraiser here https://www.gofundme.com/f/bahamas-helping-restart
