It may be too early in the season to call Millwall’s fixture with Huddersfield Town a ‘six-pointer,’ but the magnitude of the tie is not lost on midfielder Ben Thompson.

Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to QPR dropped the Lions 16th in the table, and on a winless run of six games, only those in the bottom three are on a worse run of form.

Millwall haven’t won on the road in the league since March, but a trip to the league’s basement club on Saturday will provide Neil Harris’s side with a huge opportunity to end that run and recapture the early season positivity around the club.

Huddersfield who have endured a torrid return to the Championship since their relegation have picked up just one point from their opening eight fixtures, and Thompson knows the importance of getting the right result at the John Smith’s Stadium.

“It’s massive!” said Thompson.

“We go away from home and we need to pick our away form up.

“Going to Huddersfield it’s something we can do there.

“Obviously they’re not doing so great at the moment, and we need to bounce back massively.

“We’ve got enough in the dressing room and a great set of lads to do so.”

New Role

Thompson has been a regular in Harris’s line-up since his return from a Portsmouth loan nine months ago.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a purple patch at the back end of the season where he was playing in a more advanced role for the Lions, but this campaign the manager has used him in a deeper midfield role.

“It’s something different.

“I can play anywhere in the midfield, I feel comfortable.

“If we need to defend I can adapt, I played a more of a holding role against QPR.

“I can play attack as well, either way as long as I’m part of it I’m happy.”
