A major Wimbledon road has been closed today after the discovery of a large void.

Merton Council said that Worple Road is closed in both directions due to emergency repair work and advised everyone where possible to avoid the area.

"Worple Road outside 74 works started July 15 with two way lights to repair a leaking water main," a statement read.

"Due to the risk of collapse the decision was made to close Worple Road."

The council added that for those who must use the area, the diversion routes are as follows:

Eastbound Traffic from the A3:

Coombe Lane, Pepys Road, Kingston Road, Hartfield Road, ending on Wimbledon Bridge/Wimbledon Hill Road

Westbound Traffic from Parkside/Alexandra Road:

Wimbledon Hill Road, Ridgeway, Copse Hill, ending at the junction of Coombe Lane allowing traffic to access the A3 or head back down Coombe Lane if they wish to access Raynes Park.
