NELSON got ready for its weekend Ballet Festival in March 1982.

The weekend had already been extended to three weekends as many girls took part.

The first weekend at the Civic Centre in Nelson had a good standard of dancing, according to adjudicator, Miss Peggy Glen.

Despite girls from all over the North West representing their towns, local girls also enjoyed some success.

Ballet section chairman, Mr Lawrence Mutter, said: "We are delighted by the number of entries, certainly a record in recent years.

"There are something like 1,400 from 400 children.

"Because of this excellent support we have had to extend the festival to six days. Next year we have been selected as one of the heats for the area semi-finals for the All England Final."
