The Ahmadiyya Muslim community is opening its doors for a Big Iftar feast at the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden.

Iftar is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan.

This year, Ahmadiyya community will host two open-door 'Big Iftar' events, and everyone from communities in South West London and beyond are welcome to attend for what organisers describe as "an amazing community environment (featuring) mouth watering culinary delicacies."

National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK Rafiq Hayat reflected on the community's uniquely welcoming approach, which has also seen the Baitul Futuh Mosque (Morden Mosque) open its doors for free tours to the public during Ramadan, and said he hoped the Big Iftar events would encourage friendship in the area.

"Our moto is love for all and hatred for none, we aim to build a relationship of trust, friendship and respect across communities and these gatherings will help to promote these objectives," Mr Hayat said.

Though normal pursuits and work are carried on during the month, the emphasis for Muslims observing Ramadan is on spiritual reflection, moral improvement and increased religious devotion.

The fasting that takes place during Ramadan is designed to enhance this heightened focus on religion, while the Iftar meals break the fast at sunset and are communal gatherings.

Ibrahim Ikhlaf, Director for Outreach and Public Affairs described what attendees at the Big Iftars can expect.

Mr Ikhlaf said: "In addition to sharing with us a grand and delicious meal to break the fast, visitors will be able to view exhibitions, partake in mosque tours and discuss any aspect of the Islamic faith as well as take away informative books and other literature including translations of the Holy Quran."

The first of two Big Iftar events at Morden Mosque is taking place tomorrow (Wednesday, May 15) at 7pm.

The second Big Iftar is scheduled for the same time and place on Saturday, May 25.

Attendance is free for everyone.
