A young carers service in Richmond received a grant of nearly £100k from a national charity improving the lives of disadvantaged young people.

Global’s Make Some Noise gave Richmond Carers Centre £98,000 to fund their work supporting people under the age of 18 who take on practical or emotional caring responsibilities normally expected of an adult.

LBC presenter Shelagh Fogarty presented the cheque at LBC’s studios to two members of the Young Carers Service earlier this week.

Sophie Richardson, Young Carers Support Team Leader said: ‘We were lost for words when we were presented with our cheque.

“I cannot express just how much of a difference this funding will make to the services we provide to our Young Carers.”

Funding a health and wellbeing project with a full-time care coordinator for two years, the grant will also enable the team to put on extra activities, offer more confidence building sessions, buy new equipment and recruit additional sessional workers.

Every year, Richmond Young Carers Service supports over 450 carers, from 5-18 years, and their families.

Some young carers are still in primary school, taking on a responsibility beyond their years, perhaps helping a brother or sister who has a disability, or a mum or dad with a long-term illness.

The Young Carers team are always on hand to support them by providing emotional support and services that give them a break from their caring responsibilities
