Kingston Town Hall will host an awareness event ahead of National Deaf Awareness Week next month.

Signs4Life is a UK-based NGO promoting greater inclusion for the deaf community in Britain.

At the start of National Deaf Awareness week on Monday, May 6, the group is hosting an event designed to highlight some strategies and methods for people effected by hearing impediment.

Sara Phillips, Signs4Life tutor, said that it is a problem effecting a large proportion of people in the UK and the event would focus on simple ways to improve awareness and wellbeing.

Ms Phillips said: "There are over 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people registered in the UK."

The event, Ms Phillips added, would highlight "practical interventions" for those affected by hearing impediment, with some basic advice tips such as enunciating clearly and making eye contact when communicating.

A workshop on British Sign Language is also scheduled for the event.
