Southend United have condemned hooligans responsible for an attack on an AFC Wimbledon supporters’ coach promising to take “strong action”.

Thugs, with their faces covered, smashed the window of a coach carrying Dons fans during the latest incident involving “Shrimpers’ fans”.

The attack took place shortly after Wimbledon beat Southend on Saturday.

Police were informed at 5.25pm a supporters’ coach had an object thrown at it in Victoria Avenue, Southend.

The coach had just left Roots Hall and one of the windows was smashed.

Police received further information that three people with their faces covered ran from the scene. None of the passengers onboard the coach were injured.

Blues fans were left frustrated after the match against Wimbledon saw the home team suffer a one nil defeat.

Southend United have strongly condemned the behaviour and promised to take action when those responsible are found.

A spokesman for the club said: “This kind of behaviour is completely unacceptable and is wholeheartedly condemned by the club.

“We will not tolerate anyone found to be involved and will take strong action against those culpable.”

The appeal comes on the four-year anniversary of the sickening attack on Cambridge fan Simon Dobbin by a group of Southend fans. Simon was left severely brain damaged and his wife Nicole took to Twitter to urge fans to end violence in the sport.

She said: “Can’t believe it’s been four years since my husband was set upon by 12 football thugs and left for dead after an unprovoked attack. Sadly they get to carry on with their lives while ours have been totally destroyed #letsendfootballviolence.” It also follows other incidents at recent matches.
