Peak hour delays to and from Waterloo station are expected today following an electrical issue.

The problem relates to a track circuit which is an electrical system that detects the absence of a train on a section of railway.

This information then helps the signalling system know if its safe for another train to proceed.

Network Rail has been informed that there is a track circuit failure in the Waterloo area, affecting platforms 11, 12 and 13 which as a result means some lines are blocked between Clapham Junction.

Due to the failure, Network Rail have reduced capacity at Waterloo.

"In order to avoid congestion near Waterloo, we are required to reduce the number of trains running into Waterloo," a statement on National Rail's website read.

"Until further notice the following service alterations will be in place."

South Western Railway services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or delayed as a result and the disruption is expected until at least 6pm.
