Changes to a ‘vital’ bus service have been slammed by a group of Sutton councillors.

The 154 bus from Morden currently goes through Wallington and the Roundshaw Estate, ending up at West Croydon bus station.

But now Transport for London (TfL) has plans to terminate the route earlier, at Fairfield Halls.

Now councillors for Beddington South and Roundshaw have launched a campaign against Transport for London (TfL) plans to terminate the 154 bus earlier along the route.

Councillor Mo Saqib has described the 154 ‘an especially vital service’ for those in the Roundshaw and Apeldoorn estates.

The Liberal Democract councillor said that results of a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to TfL show that in 2018 an average of 711 people a day boarded the 154 from seven bus stops along Sandy Lane South, Foresters Drive and Mollison Drive.

Cllr Saqib said: “The 154 bus is an especially vital service for local residents who need to do their shopping in Croydon or access London Overground trains from West Croydon.

“The proposal to terminate the service early is due to Conservative ministers slashing £700 million from TfL’s budget.

“It’s a proposal that will cause particular inconvenience for the elderly, the disabled and those who work up in London, all of whom will have to change buses or walk further.”

He added that the trio have written to TfL asking for a compromise that ‘at least’ every alternate service should continue to West Croydon.

But Geoff Hobbs, TfL’s director of public transport service planning, said: “The way people travel around London is constantly changing and our latest data shows that the majority of customers now do not use buses to travel across Croydon town centre, which is why we proposed to curtail the 154 at Park Street.

“This would improve congestion and air quality in the town centre, while still allowing customers to continue their journeys to West Croydon Bus station on the 109 or 60 at no extra cost within the first hour.”

Public consultation on the plans closed last month and responses are currently being analysed by TfL.

A petition to keep the 154 going to West Croydon has been launched and can be found here.
